The SANAM Import Declaration Service allows the Customs Department to receive import declarations, together with the relevant trade information, electronically from Importers and Customs Brokers through the SaudiEDI system.

The Importers and Customs Brokers will be alerted once the application is accepted by the Customs Department. They can then proceed with the payment of customs duties, thus facilitating faster cargo clearance.

Typically, to submit an import declaration, Customs Brokers have to travel to the Customs offices at the respective ports and manually enter the import declaration data at the Customs kiosk. After which, Customs Brokers will submit the necessary supporting documents in a folder to the Customs officers. Upon acceptance, the Customs officer prints the official import declaration and places it in the folder, which will be returned to the Customs Brokers. The folder is subsequently handed to the Ports Contractors to prepare for Customs inspection.

After inspecting the goods, the Customs officers will sign the official import declaration form and physically hand it to the Customs Brokers. With the official import declaration form, Customs Brokers have to make the necessary payment for the customs duty before the goods are released. The Customs Brokers will then be issued a release note to be presented for cargo clearance.

With SANAM, Customs Brokers are able to create and submit their import declarations to Customs in the comfort of their offices. The Customs Brokers are also able to receive the accepted import declaration and information on the inspection schedule and customs duty payable electronically through SANAM without leaving their office.

When the duty payment is made to the bank, the Customs Broker will receive an electronic payment fulfilment confirmation through SANAM. Thereafter, the Customs Broker can proceed to obtain the release note which signifies the release of goods by Customs.
